Points and pace in basketball: why scoring a lot isn't playing well

TL;DR. A team scoring 95 points a game is not necessarily a better attacking side than one scoring 82: it may simply play faster. Separating pace (how many possessions there are) from efficiency (how many points come out of each one) is the first step to understanding any basketball statistic.

Pace and efficiency are different things

Pace counts how many possessions each team gets in a game. A side that runs, shoots early in the clock and forces turnovers generates far more possessions than one that drains the shot clock on every attack.

Efficiency measures what the team gets from each possession: points per possession, not points per game. It is what separates a good offence from a fast one, and it is the metric that genuinely describes attacking quality.

Points per game — what almost everyone looks at — is the product of the two. Which is why the same number can describe an excellent slow team or a mediocre very fast one.

To anticipate a game's points total, both teams' pace weighs more than their efficiency. Two fast teams produce a high-scoring game even if neither attacks especially well, simply because there are more possessions to share out.

Why favourites win more in basketball than in football

A basketball game has on the order of a hundred possessions per team; a football match has two or three goals. With that many repetitions, the law of large numbers operates inside the game itself: differences in level have time to show and randomness averages out.

The practical consequence is that upsets are far rarer in basketball than in football, the expected points margin is a fairly stable quantity, and that is why handicap and total markets are the sport's natural ones.

What the model does

The basketball engine estimates the expected points margin and the expected total from the teams' Elo ratings and their opponent-adjusted scoring output, then uses that distribution to compute the probability of the winner, of the handicap and of each total line.

An honest warning: the basketball market is among the most efficient we have measured. Estimating probability well is not the same as finding value, and in this sport the distance between the two is especially large.
