Points by quarter: why the four periods are not the same

TL;DR. Splitting the game into quarters looks like bookkeeping and is not: the four periods have different statistical dynamics. The first quarter is the cleanest and the fourth the most contaminated, and anyone reading period averages without knowing that will reach the wrong conclusions.

The first quarter is the most predictable

It starts with both starting fives on court, no accumulated fouls, no fatigue and no scoreline shaping decisions. It is the phase in which both teams play most like themselves.

That is why first-quarter averages carry the least noise. They reflect the quality of the starters and the game plan, not the reaction to an adverse scoreline.

The last quarter is the most distorted

The final period brings in factors that have nothing to do with the teams' level: the side that is behind starts fouling deliberately to stop the clock, which inflates free throws; the side ahead manages the clock and slows the pace. The two effects pull in opposite directions and, in practice, tempo wins: the last quarter is usually not the highest-scoring one, but the least predictable.

And in decided games the bench comes on, playing minutes in which neither team resembles the one that started. The result is a quarter with very high variance: not the highest-scoring one on average, but the one where the gap between what you expected and what happens is widest.

Practical consequences

  • Do not extrapolate the first quarter to the game. A team that starts hot does not hold that pace for four periods; multiplying by four is the classic error.
  • Do not compare averages across different quarters. The last one mixes free throws from deliberate fouls with stretches of managed clock, and neither describes how a team attacks.
  • Mind the interval. The long break between the second and third quarters allows tactical adjustments that do not exist between the first and second. The third often looks more like a restart than a continuation.
  • Check the format. Some competitions use quarters of different length, and that shifts every period average at once.
