Point differential: the best indicator of level in basketball
TL;DR. In basketball, average point differential — how much a team wins or loses by on average — predicts future performance better than its win-loss record. A team at 10-10 with a +4 differential is systematically better than one with the same record and −4.

Why the win-loss record misleads
A one-point win and a 25-point win count exactly the same in the standings, yet they describe very different teams. The record throws all that information away: it turns the scoreline into a binary.
The practical problem is that close games are decided largely by chance — a final shot that drops or does not — so a team with a record far better than its differential has won plenty of tight games and probably will not keep doing so. And conversely: a team with a good differential and a bad record is usually about to improve its results without changing anything about how it plays.

The essential adjustment: garbage time
Differential has a known flaw that has to be mentally corrected: the closing minutes of decided games distort it. A team 20 up that empties the bench can end up winning by 12, and one 20 down can cut it to 8 against the opposition's reserves.
So differential should always be read alongside the schedule, and with the awareness that very lopsided games contribute a less informative number than they appear to.
