Ice hockey: power play, penalties and overtime rate
TL;DR. In ice hockey three numbers explain much of what happens on the scoreboard: the power play (how much a team punishes a man advantage), penalties (how often it gets into trouble or drags the opponent into it) and the overtime rate, which is the best signal of how tight a league is.

Power play: the man advantage
When a player is penalised, their team plays short-handed for two minutes or more. That stretch is the highest-scoring-probability situation in the sport, which is why power-play performance separates teams so sharply.
We publish two different things worth keeping apart: the power play percentage (how often the team converts its advantages into a goal) and power play goals (how many it has scored in total). The first measures efficiency, the second volume: a team can rack up power-play goals simply because it is awarded a lot of advantages.
Penalties cut both ways
A heavily penalised team gives away advantages and concedes more. But the number is not one-directional: an aggressive team also draws penalties, and the same sides often rank high in both penalties taken and advantages earned.
That is why the penalty count is always read next to the power play, never on its own. A penalised team that also converts its advantages well is not an undisciplined side: it is a side that plays open games, with more goals at both ends.
The overtime rate measures parity, not quality

The overtime rate also matters because it changes the arithmetic of the scoreboard: many leagues award different points in regulation and in overtime, and total goals markets settle differently depending on whether extra time counts. Always check that rule before comparing totals across leagues.
What they do NOT tell you
- They are not opponent-adjusted. A 25% power play against the league's worst penalty kills is worth less than 20% against the best.
- The power play has a small sample. It is computed over advantages, not minutes played: a handful of matches cannot separate efficiency from luck.
- Overtime is a rare event. A high rate over few matches is almost certainly noise.
